Roma 2-1 Napoli

Roma 2-1 Napoli

Francesco Totti struck twice as Roma came from behind to beat Napoli on Sunday afternoon.

The Roma captain scored his first in the 37th minute to cancel out Ezequiel Lavezzi's opener.

Totti then grabbed the winner shortly after the hour mark to bring the Stadio Olimpico to life and hand Napoli their fourth defeat on the road this season.

The result marked Roma's fourth win of the campaign, their first in three games, and lifts the Giallorossi to eighth in the Serie A standings.

Roberto Donadoni's Napoli arrived in Rome desperate to improve their away form having failed to win on their travels since October 2008.

The hosts came into the clash hoping to reproduce the improved form which saw off CSKA Sofia in the Europa League in midweek.

But despite having plenty of possession early on, Roma lacked the incisive cutting edge to break down Napoli's well-organised defence.

With 21 minutes played, Roma coach Claudio Ranieri had already been forced to make two substitutions.

Marco Motta sustained an injury early on and was replaced by Marco Cassetti while shortly after, goalkeeper Bogdan Lobont entered the pitch in place of the injured Julio Sergio.

The changes hindered Roma as Napoli took the lead in the 25th minute in what was their first chance of the match.

Marek Hamsik served Lavezzi who turned in the heart of the area before firing a right-footed strike past Lobont.

The goal inspired the visitors, who almost extended their lead minutes later, with Jesus Datolo's bullet strike from the edge of the area going inches wide of the far post.

On the half-hour mark, Napoli goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis did well to punch away David Pizarro's powerful free-kick as Roma showed more ambition.

Napoli should have made it 2-0 on 37 minutes, Lavezzi's clever pass cut Roma's defence wide open and found Cristian Maggio inside the area, who struck wide and high.

Roma showed more aggressiveness in attack and restored parity before half-time.

Simone Perrotta's volley was deflected by Totti's leg inside the box with De Sanctis already beaten.

Roma should have doubled their lead early in the second half but De Sanctis made a fine clearance with his feet from Totti's close-range effort.

The hosts continued to surge forward and they were rewarded.

Cassetti served Totti inside the area who fired past De Sanctis.

Totti hurt his knee in that action but with Roma having made all of their substitutions, he remained on the pitch.

Substitute Ricardo Faty almost made it 3-1 soon after with his powerful volley from Daniele De Rossi's assist beating De Sanctis but going just inches wide of the near post.

Napoli showed more determination in the final 10 minutes and had a great chance to take home a point.

Erwin Hoffer did well to latch onto Datolo's cross from the left but his close-range header went wide, much to the relief of the Roma supporters.
