Livorno vs Palermo Preview

Palermo coach Walter Zenga has challenged his side to repeat their impressive performance against Juventus when they meet Livorno on Sunday.

The 2-0 triumph over title contenders Juve in the last round ended the Sicilian giants' five-match winless run.

The battling display against Juve appears to have lifted the gloom that was starting to descend on the club.

"We wanted to prove that we are a good team," said Zenga, whose side lie 10th in the Serie A standings. "We were in a difficult position heading into the game against Juve but my team responded in the best possible way.

"I hope this is not a one-off and the team shows the same character and hunger at Livorno.

"My team must show continuity in results."

The Rosaneri go into this weekend's encounter at the Stadio Armando Picchi looking for their first win on their travels.

Palermo have struggled away from Sicily claiming just two points from three games on the road.

"We cannot depend on the results at La Favorita," said Zenga. "We have to start winning on the road."

Livorno coach Vittorio Russo is hoping his team's lowly position in the table will serve as a wake-up call for his players.

The Amaranto have endured a dismal start to the season, and a haul of just three points from their opening seven Serie A matches has left them at the foot of the standings.

"We know on Sunday we simply must win," said Russo.

"I won't say the extra pressure we are under is a bad thing. It could prove to be an advantage. Only by gaining a victory can we make things easier for ourselves. The board, the players and I are determined to win this weekend."

A goalless draw at Siena last time out was a consolation for the promoted outfit as the outcome marked Livorno's first point taken on the road this campaign.

Despite his team remaining winless this season, Russo does not fear for his job yet.

"My post is as stable as a rock," said Russo.

The Leghorn-based outfit have the worst attacking record in the competition with just one goal netted in seven games, courtesy of veteran striker Cristiano Lucarelli.

However, Palermo striker Igor Budan knows his team cannot afford to underestimate tomorrow's opponents.

"We will face a team that plays well and defends well," said Budan.

"They have endured a difficult start to the tournament.

"They have struggled in front of goal but they have a veteran striker, Cristiano Lucarelli, who is lethal in front of goal and who can do a lot of damage."

Russo will be hoping Lucarelli can increase his goal tally. Lucarelli will lead Livorno's attacking line alongside Francesco Tavano.

The hosts will be without midfielder Davide Marchini, who serves a one-match ban.

But the good news for Russo is that Antonio Candreva is available for selection having shaken off a knee problem.

Palermo travel to the mainland in full strength with Mark Bresciano, Fabio Liverani and Simon Kjaer all recovered from their respective injuries.
