Livorno 1-0 Atalanta
A goal midway through the second half by Leonardo Miglionico was enough to secure Livorno's second successive victory.
Miglionico headed the only goal of the game from a corner after 68 minutes for the Amaranto's second consecutive 1-0 win following the victory over Roma last time out.
It takes them on to the same points as their opponents although Atalanta still have a superior goal difference.
It was a largely uninspiring game at the Armando Picchi stadium with the hosts in the thick of the first action when Cristiano Lucarelli appealed for a penalty after going down under a challenge from Jose Talamonti.
The referee however gave the foul to the visitors.
Shortly after it was Atalanta's time to attack and when Cristiano Doni was brought down by Marcus Diniz, Tiberio Guarente floated in a free kick but goalkeeper Mirko Pieri cleared the danger.
Simone Tiribocchi then missed a great chance to put the visitors ahead.
The striker collected a perfect ball from Doni but his shot was completely off target.
Antonio Candreva sent a free-kick narrowly over for Livorno before Tiribocchi failed to direct Jaime Valdes' cross from the right on target.
It was the final action of a largely dull first half.
The referee was called on to calm things down after half time when Gyorgy Garics and Nico Pulzetti got heated and clashed.
Shortly after, Lucarelli again went down in the area under pressure from Talamonti and again the referee awarded the free kick to the Atalanta defender.
There was little inspiration or creativity about the game but then Miglionico broke the deadlock.
The Uruguayan defender gave Livorno the lead as he headed in from a corner although Atalanta keeper Andrea Consigli will be disappointed he did not do better after getting a touch on the ball.
Atalanta responded immediately when substitute Ivan Radovanovic unleashed a right-footed shot from outside the area which Francesco Benussi pushed away.
With a little over 10 minutes left, Candreva did well to break free of his marker on the edge of the area but after doing all the hard work the midfielder produced a poor final shot.
Atalanta continued to push and Fabio Ceravolo came close to an equaliser.
Radovanovic picked the substitute out with a lobbed pass but Ceravolo's shot with the outside of his boot flew over the bar.
Livorno managed to hold on to claim their second win of the season leaving coach Serse Cosmi with a 100% success record.
The Leghorn-based club face a hugely difficult task if they are to extend this record, however, as their next opponents are league leaders Inter Milan on Sunday.
Atalanta will be looking to get back on track after their search for three consecutive wins was cut short by Livorno.
Antonio Conte's men travel to Cagliari who have won just once at home this season.
