Genoa 4-2 Siena
Genoa won another dramatic encounter at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris today, beating Siena to move up to sixth in Serie A.
It looked all too easy for the home side when two goals from Hernan Crespo and a Raffaele Palladino strike gave them a three-goal lead after 35 minutes.
But just like in the Europa League against Lille on Thursday, they risked throwing the win away as Michele Paolucci (80) and Massimo Maccarone (82) brought Siena right back into the game.
However, Sergio Floccari provided a last-minute fourth to end Siena's hopes of an equaliser.
If Genoa were tired after their epic Europa League clash with Lille on Thursday, they did not show it as they raced into a three-goal lead.
Crespo put them ahead in the second minute with Rodrigo Palacio striking Giandomenico Mesto's cross against the post and his Argentinian compatriot buried the rebound.
Crespo almost scored again in the fifth minute when he was inches away from converting Francesco Modesto's cross, but he was in an offside position anyway.
Another chance went begging for Crespo in the 11th minute when he seemed to lack the conviction to reach a deep cross from Mesto.
But he was on hand to score his and Genoa's second in the 18th minute, tucking the ball into the back of the net after Gianluca Curci fumbled Palacio's shot into his path just seven yards from goal.
Siena were dangerous with a succession of backpasses causing Genoa goalkeeper Alessio Scarpi so many problems that Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini screamed at his defence to only hit the ball forward.
Abdel Kader Ghezzal and Maccarone both almost took advantage of Genoa's stand-in goalkeeper's insecurity.
But the better chances continued to fall at the other end of the field, and almost always to Crespo, who shot over the crossbar from when placed in the 25th minute.
Siena still had the chance to get back in the game when Scarpi fumbled a shot from Albin Ekdal to the feet of Mato Jajalo, who lifted the ball over the Genoa goalkeeper, but Andrea Esposito had got in around the back to clear the ball off the line.
Palladino made it three 10 minutes before the break with Palacio again the provider.
Like Crespo for the first two goals, Palladino showed his goal-poaching skills to time his run well and meet Palacio's cross underneath the crossbar and tuck the ball in to provide the perfect finish to a quick, well-worked counter-attack.
Crespo was denied a golden opportunity to complete his hat-trick in the 38th minute when Domenico Criscito's left-wing cross was practically taken off the Argentinian's head by Goncalo Brandao.
Siena had a goal disallowed just before the interval when Simone Vergassola scored from an offside position after Ekdal's shot was only parried by Scarpi.
After their efforts on Thursday, and with the result seemingly beyond doubt, Genoa started to take a well-earned break early in the second half and this allowed Siena to obtain the lion's share of the possession.
They created a few chances too with Vergassola's shot saved well low down to his left by Scarpi and Ghezzal sending a powerful shot just wide.
Paolucci gave them hope with 10 minutes left when he beat Scarpi with a low shot into the far corner and Maccarone brought the Bianconeri right back into it two minutes later with a powerful left-footed volley into the opposite corner.
Aleandro Rosi twice shot wide as Siena surged forward in search of a dramatic equaliser, but they got caught with the sucker-punch as Floccari sealed the win for Genoa, beating Curci from the edge of the penalty area in the last minute.
