Fiorentina vs Atalanta Preview

Fiorentina will look to cut the gap on the teams chasing Inter Milan at the top of Serie A when they host struggling Atalanta.

The Viola are 10th, seven points off AC Milan in second place and need to win if they are to retain any hopes of pursuing those at the top of the table after two successive league defeats.

Spirits will be high this week, though, after they guaranteed their Champions League progress with victory over Lyon.

The Florence side have won four games at home this season and will be hoping to get back on track although they can feel aggrieved over their last game when a late penalty gave Inter Milan all three points.

Midfielder Marco Donadel knows the clash against lowly Atalanta offers a clear opportunity to return to winning ways.

He said: "Against Atalanta we can get back on track and recover points in the championship.

"There is still a long way to go in the table. The desire to win has always been there but today we have gained the right awareness."

Atalanta are 17th in the league with 12 points, although their away record is respectable, the Nerazzurri having won twice on their travels.

Last time out they lost 2-1 to Roma despite leading until just before half-time and going down to their eighth defeat of the season.

The match is vital for the Bergamo side and coach Antonio Conte said: "Fiorentina have already obtained qualification in the Champions League, although ultimately in the league they have not offered compelling evidence that they can gain consistent results."

Conte is also adamant Atalanta will not go down and told TMW: "Atalanta will save itself, I am 100% sure of it.

"I will do the impossible.

"I am willing to work for free for the rest of my life in Bergamo, as relegation is a situation that I am not even thinking of.

"The team's project is important, and the club is investing in good players.

"We only have to realise our situation and potential, and we will arrive at our objective, starting in Florence with humility."
