Roma captain Francesco Totti has signed a contract extension until June 2014, the Serie A club confirmed.

The 33-year-old had been in negotiations with the Eternal City outfit regarding a new deal for the last 12 months.

Totti, a World Cup winner with Italy, has been at Roma since 1992 and would have become a free agent next summer.

A statement from the club read: "AS Roma and captain Francesco Totti announce they have reached an agreement to extend the contract, currently ending in June 2010, until June 2014.

"The player will receive 8.6m euros per season."
