Claudio Ranieri retains caution

Claudio Ranieri has pleaded against overconfidence after Roma beat Udinese 2-0 in the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg.

Mirko Vucinic opened the scoring for Roma after 12 minutes and defender Philippe Mexes added the second five minutes later.

Roma coach Ranieri, who welcomed by captain Francesco Totti from injury, feels the players should not be get carried away by the two-goal advantage going into the second leg played on April 14.

“It was important to win without conceding on home turf, but even then two goals do not put us in a secure position,” said Ranieri.

“The second leg is not for two months and anything can happen in that time. We can get worse and Udinese can improve. We have to wait and see.”

Meanwhile, Udinese coach Giovanni De Biasi has hinted the Cup is not his first priority.

“We were not our usual selves,” said De Biasi. “We were set out well and didn’t run huge risks other than the goals, but against teams like Roma you cannot make mistakes.

“Safety in Serie A is our primary objective and we’ll do everything to achieve it. We have what it takes.”
