Gilardino plays down penalty row

Alberto Gilardino is trying to downplay the penalty furore which involved him and Stevan Jovetic during Fiorentina's 3-0 win over Genoa.

The Viola were 1-0 up when Jovetic was fouled in Genoa's penalty box and both players argued over who should take it.

Upon witnessing the exchange, Viola coach Cesare Prandelli was reportedly shouting angrily from the touchline. Gilardino eventually took the penalty and scored to avoid any potential embarrassment.

"I took the penalty, I scored, we won, we played well and that's it," the Fiorentina striker told Sky Sport Italia after the game.

"Jovetic? He didn't say anything. I felt like taking the penalty and so I did. He usually does it in training."

Despite the reported in-fighting among the two strikers, Fiorentina look to revive their hopes of qualifying for Europe next season after climbing to seventh spot.

"We will battle on for the next nine games and then we will see if we can get into Europe," Gilardino added.

"We played really well, and despite being written off by some, we are still there."
