Alexandre Pato scored an extra-time winner as AC Milan edged past Novara 2-1 in their Coppa Italia last-16 tie at the San Siro on Wednesday night.

Pato netted 10 minutes into the first extra period to end the visitors' hopes of an upset.

Novara, who sit bottom of the Serie A table, had equalised in the 88th minute through Ivan Radovanovic after Stephan El Shaarawi had given Milan a 24th-minute lead.
