Cannavaro eyes Italian swansong

Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro is set to return to Italy next season to end his career, according to his agent.

The Italy international joined Madrid in 2006 in the wake of the Calciopoli affair which saw Juventus relegated to Serie B, and has won two La Liga titles since his arrival.

Cannavaro, who will turn 35 in September, has a contract which is due to expire in 2009, at which point his agent claims the defender will return to his home-town club Napoli.

"The current situation is that Fabio Cannavaro is about to begin his last season in a Real Madrid shirt," Gaetano Fedele told Italian station Radio Kiss Kiss.

"We will see what happens during the season, and whether or not there is the possibility of renewing his contract.

"However, his dream has always been to return to finish his career at Napoli, the place where it all began for him."

Should he make the switch back to Naples he may line up alongside his younger brother Paolo, who currently plays for the Partenopei.
