Terry forced out by injury

Injured John Terry will miss England’s World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan and is set to also sit out against Belarus.

The England skipper was clearly in pain during yesterday’s training session, which was used to determine whether Terry could feature for the team against Kazakhstan and Belarus. But the Chelsea player was declared unfit for the two matches. Terry is likely to leave the England camp in the next 24 hours and will return to Chelsea to continue treatment.

Even though Kazakhstan hardly pose a significant threat, Capello will be worried with the loss of Terry against Belarus in Minsk next Wednesday, which could prove a tricky tie for England.

It is no coincidence that England underperformed when Terry was absent in defence. They were defeated by Russia and Croatia during the Euro 2008 qualifiers, and the backline was badly exposed with Terry’s presence.

West Ham defender Matthew Upson is likely to replace Terry, with Rio Ferdinand getting the captain’s armband.

England’s injury woes do not end with Terry though. Wigan striker Emile Heskey has also suffered from a back injury and in-form Portsmouth striker Peter Crouch is expected to take his place in attack.
