Gerrard fears for England place
Steven Gerrard has admitted that he could lose his automatic spot in team, after struggling to ‘click’ with Frank Lampard.
The failings of the Gerrard and Lampard combination in the heart of the England midfield is widely debated, as the pair has always been criticised by fans for their inability to do well for their country.Yet, when the duo is not paired together, it seems that Lampard produces a top-drawer performance, which he showed in their World Cup qualifying win against Croatia. Gerrard did not feature in that match because he was absent due to a groin injury.
England boss Fabio Capello selected the pair for their 5-1 victory over Kazakhstan last weekend. However, it was a less than impressive display from Gerrard and Lampard, as speculation begins to build over the Liverpool man being dropped for Wednesday’s clash against Belarus.
Gerrard told Sky Sports News that Lampard and himself “have yet to form a perfect link” and “haven’t clicked”.
"Me and Frank have gone on record saying we haven't clicked," he said.
"We admit that.
"We are working hard on the training ground to improve. But it is a small part of the team.
"We have a good manager and we believe we are going places and we will take each game as it comes and concentrate on that."
Although admitting he is worried about his place in the starting eleven, Gerrard recognises that Capello may eventually choose different players for the Belarus match.
"Whatever we decide is down to the manager," added Gerrard. "He will use different personnel and formations."
With England winning three consecutive matches in Group 6, Gerrard believes his team-mates should not be complacent. Rather, he considers the game against Belarus as “a difficult task”.
"We're not getting carried away," he said. "There are a lot of hurdles. We have three wins out three, but it (Belarus) is a difficult task.
"We realise it's a tough test, but we're ready. It's about us and how we play. We're confident we can make it four wins out of four."
