Macala rallies Bahrain to get result

Bahrain coach Milan Macala has called on his players to seize their chance to keep their World Cup dream alive against Uzbekistan on Wednesday.

The Bahrain coach wants his team to clinch a play-off spot in Group A of Asian qualifying.

The Gulf nation need just a point from the game at Bahrain National Stadium to secure third place in the group, while Uzbekistan need a victory if they are to claim the play-off spot at the expense of their hosts.

Macala is confident his players can deal with the importance of the situation and get the draw they need.

"The game on Wednesday is decisive and we must not let this chance go," said Macala.

"Winning the game will give us a chance to continue the dream of qualifying to the World Cup finals by playing in the play-offs."

Uzbekistan coach Mirjalal Kasimov, meanwhile, knows nothing less than three points will do for his side.

Defender Anvar Gaforuv, who missed the previous game against Japan through suspension, is back in contention while Victor Karpenko and Zaynitdin Tadjiyev are also included in the squad.

"We have already played several times against Bahrain so we know this team well," said Kasimov.

"We are now in a situation where it is necessary to do everything to get the three points."

Australia coach Pim Verbeek has declared himself proud of his players as they bring the curtain down on a successful qualifying campaign against Japan in the other game in the group at the MCG tomorrow.

Both sides have already secured their place at the World Cup leaving only the top spot at stake in their final qualifier.

As a result Australia are set to field a weakened side in order to rest first team regulars after a gruelling campaign that has seen the Socceroos play 14 games in the last 16 months.

"We did fantastic, I think. Great results," said Verbeek. "We scored more than enough goals, seven games with clean sheets and I'm so proud of my players.

"We are going to play a big game tomorrow to finish it off and then we deserve a nice break before they start quite early in the European leagues."

First-choice players Harry Kewell and Mark Bresciano have already been ruled out while Verbeek confirmed he will not start any of the players carrying a yellow card.

There are 11 Australian players carrying a caution from earlier qualifying rounds, meaning another yellow against Japan at the MCG would see them suspended for the first match of the showpiece South African tournament.

Japan coach Takeshi Okada is adamant his side will play for victory tomorrow as they look to snatch top spot in the group and end their campaign strongly.

"Australia are an excellent team, they have many good players from European clubs and it is always tough to play against them," he said.

"But we have a great desire to win this game.

"We enjoy playing against the best teams, and to beat Australia and finish top of the group would be a fantastic thing for Japan."

Captain and central defender Yuji Nakazawa will not play after being struck down by illness earlier this week while a number of other players will be rested.
