WCQ: Group Seven Preview

WCQ: Group Seven Preview

France are refusing to give up on automatic qualification for the World Cup finals, even though Group Seven table-toppers Serbia have a four-point advantage over them approaching the final two fixtures.

France effectively need to beat the Faroe Islands as anticipated to stay in with a chance.

But they also need Serbia to secure a draw at best, or ideally lose, at home to Romania if the qualification equation is to extend into next week's last round.

Yet goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, for one, is far from ready to give up on finishing the campaign as group winners.

"It's still feasible. We still believe," he said. "Nothing is over. We're going to fight for it until the end.

"We're depending enormously on Serbia but we have to first win our two matches and hope for the opposite from Serbia.

"Anything can happen. There's still all to play for, Serbia don't have easy matches to play."

Mandanda is certain to be in goal tomorrow with Hugo Lloris suspended following his sending off in last month's draw in Serbia.

France coach Raymond Domenech knows only a convincing victory is likely to ease the pressure on him ahead of the final qualifier against Austria.

The Faroes will not necessarily make things easy for their hosts, having lost only 1-0 to them in the return fixture.

Even so, coach Brian Kerr is under no illusions about tomorrow's task.

"France away is a tough one all right, especially because of the position the French are in," he said.

"They need a point at least. France are playing in Guingamp, which might not get too many international games - so the stadium will be packed.

"It will be a better atmosphere than they'd have got if the game was in Paris."

Serbia can wrap up their qualification as group winners by defeating Romania at Belgrade's Stadion Crvena Zvezda.

The biggest danger for the hosts may be any repeat of the crowd disturbance which marred their match against the Romanians in Constanta six months ago, which resulted in fines for the Serbian Football Association and the threat of possible points deductions should trouble resurface.

Serbia midfielder Milan Jovanovic is hoping the home supporters will do the right thing.

"We want our fans to get behind us without causing any trouble," he said.

"They need to understand that they will only help us if they don't let their tempers get the better of their common sense - and we hope that they will create a positive atmosphere."

Jovanovic is wary too of opponents who may play with more freedom now their chance of qualifying has gone.

"The Romanians are rebuilding and will be completely relaxed, while we have to try to finish the job on home soil," he added.

"We are confident that we are the better team but we have to prove that and earn the win we need to make the final step towards South Africa."

Striker Adrian Mutu will be back for Romania after his thigh injury.

Austria are the team who could conceivably still stop France clinching at least a play-off place but they must win at home to Lithuania to keep their chance alive.
