England 3-0 Belarus
Peter Crouch scored in either half as England ended their successful World Cup qualifying campaign with a 3-0 victory over Belarus at Wembley.
Crouch, handed a rare chance to shine in the absence of the injured Wayne Rooney and Jermain Defoe, scored his 17th and 18th goals for his country on only his 35th appearance as Fabio Capello's men comfortably collected their ninth win in 10 Group Six games. Crouch's goals came either side of Shaun Wright-Phillips' fifth international notch, with the little winger also reasserting his World Cup credentials with a lively display.
The Three Lions made a lightening start with Wright-Phillips fizzing a 20-yard shot just wide, but it wasn't long before England were celebrating the opening goal. The move was started by Gareth Barry, whose pass picked out the run of Gabriel Agbonlahor down the inside left channel. His cut-back picked out Crouch, who just managed to poke the ball past goalkeeper Yury Zhevnov with just four minutes on the clock.
Agbonlahor was the next to try his luck, but his low shot was pushed out by Zhevnov before being scrambled clear for a corner. A smart run and turn by Glen Johnson then created an opening but the full-back was woefully off target with his left-footed drive.
Ben Foster was called into action seven minutes before the break when he did well to hold a firmly-struck Sergei Omelyanchuk free-kick.
England ended the first period in disappointing fashion but the introduction of David Beckham after 55 minutes sparked fresh life into the hosts. Beckham's first meaningful contribution was to play a corner across the box for Wright-Phillips, and the mercurial winger unleashed a fierce shot which skipped past the unsighted Zhevnov and into the net to make it 2-0 after 59 minutes.
England were indebted to Foster five minutes later when the Manchester United stopper stood up well and got a strong hand to push out Omelyanchuk's fierce volley from the angle.
But the victory was wrapped up after 76 minutes when substitute Carlton Cole's shot proved too hot to hold for Zhevnov and Crouch stabbed home from close range.
England were unfortunate not to add a fourth when first James Milner saw a shot hit the post and run along the line before being cleared. Moments later the other upright was rattling after Beckham's strike hit the frame, but it wasn't to be as Capello's side collected their seventh consecutive win at Wembley.
