Kilbane confident of Ireland comeback

Republic of Ireland defender Kevin Kilbane hopes his side can turn the tables on France in their World Cup play-off second leg.

They will aim to make the Stade de France a "cauldron" for the home side.

The Irish side enjoyed blistering support from the Croke Park faithful despite going down 1-0 in the first leg but the French crowd garnered a reputation for being fickle over the course of the qualifying campaign and that is something Hull left-back Kilbane believes can work against Les Bleus.

Kilbane told BBC Radio Five Live: "I was talking to the scout at Hull and he was at their last qualifying game. He told me that once they started creating chances it was fine but initially, when things weren't quite happening for them, there was quite an atmosphere in the stadium and the players started feeling a little tension.

"We're hoping if we can contain them early on we can make it a bit of a cauldron for them."

Kilbane, who is expected to equal Steve Staunton's record of 102 Republic caps alongside Shay Given on Wednesday night, also admitted there was a slight regret that the French defence were not put under more pressure in Dublin but promised to put that right in the return leg.

"Looking back now we would have taken 0-0 but we have got goals in us," he added.

"We just didn't show enough on the night and had we been a bit more adventurous we might have got a goal.

"The belief is there and we feel we can score when we go out there.

"It's going to be a tight, cagey affair but if we do keep our shape we've got a goal in us. It doesn't matter how late it comes, we feel we'll be in the game.

"We had a little meeting tonight to say let's believe in ourselves: we can score goals and we've proved that throughout the campaign.

"We're going to cherish the occasion, try to express ourselves and hopefully get a goal."
