Arshavin still hurting after exit

Arsenal playmaker Andrey Arshavin is having trouble adjusting back to club life after missing out on a place at the World Cup with Russia.

Guus Hiddink's Euro 2008 semi-finalists saw their hopes of reaching South Africa crushed by Slovenia on November 18, and Arshavin is struggling to move on.

He told the Daily Mirror: "I'm inconsolable and desolate at what's happened.

"My family keep telling me I should forget it as soon as possible, that I should now switch to club matters and the Champions League, but that's easier said than done.

"Nothing has revived me so far.

"When Arsene Wenger asked me what state I was in, I honestly told him that at the moment I just don't want to play football.

"He talked to me for a long time. He said, too, that I need to switch my attention. But I can't do it yet."

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, whose side host Chelsea in the Barclays Premier League tomorrow, admitted the player was not in the right frame of mind to start in last weekend's 1-0 defeat at Sunderland.

"He came back from Slovenia very down and that's the main reason I didn't play him from the start against Sunderland," said the Frenchman.
