England Gloves: Who is the safest?

England Gloves: Who is the safest?

So who should be England's starting goalkeeper at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa?

Robert Green's high-profile mistake in West Ham's Barclays Premier League defeat at Bolton has once again raised questions about consistency of England's goalkeepers.

We take a look at the current form of the contenders for Fabio Capello's number one jersey heading into World Cup year.

DAVID JAMES

The veteran Portsmouth stopper had shrugged off his 'calamity' tag with a string of consistent displays under Harry Redknapp as they won the FA Cup. However last season proved a battle both on the pitch to stay up as well with his own fitness, with James electing to have shoulder surgery in the summer. Nevertheless, on his return James has performed admirably in a struggling Pompey team. James' big-game experience should be enough to earn the confidence of England's back four - and more importantly, the manager ahead of next summer's showpiece tournament, which at 40 in August, would almost certainly be his last.

ROBERT GREEN

Somewhat ironically in the wake of last night's howler, Green had been a solid replacement for James, with a string of decent displays in a Hammers team fighting to stay out of the bottom three. A splendid shot-stopper, but questions remain about his command of the penalty area, and Green looks especially suspect from crosses. Missed the last World Cup because of a freak groin injury on the eve of the tournament, but the former Norwich stopper should expect to be on the plane this time.

BEN FOSTER

The 26-year-old Manchester United stopper certainly has time on his side. Was given the nod by Capello for the recent high-profile friendly against Brazil in Doha - but you suspect that was more for experience than any real statement of intent. Would expect to be among the three keepers in South Africa, but only as back-up.

PAUL ROBINSON

The Blackburn keeper has had to be patient, finally recalled to the national team set-up after a two-year absence for the qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra. Despite not having the best protection in front of him at club level - shipping six at Arsenal then five to Chelsea - Robinson has drawn many plaudits for some impressive displays. However, at 30, the fall guy from England's ill-fated Euro 2008 qualifying campaign may have seen his chance of another World Cup pass by in favour of the next generation.
