Spirited Venezuela stun Argentina

Venezuela stunned Argentina 1-0 to claim a historic victory in the second round of South American 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Colombia win, Uruguay held

Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta etched his name into the history books by scoring the only goal of the game in the 61st minute to lead Venezuela to their first ever win over the Albiceleste.

It was a solid reponse from Cesar Farias' side who were beaten 2-0 by Ecuador in their opening qualifying clash at the weekend.

Venezuela were impressive throughout the match and kept Argentina duo Javier Mascherano and defender Martin Demichelis busy for much of the match.

Argentina keeper Mariano Andujar was a key figure in the first half; producing a superb stop to deny Juan Arango a free-kick goal.

New Argentina boss Alejandro Sabella's frustrations continued in the second half as star players Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain failed to perform in Puerto La Cruz.

Higuain was particularly disappointing as it was his hat-trick which powered Argentina to a 4-1 home win over Chile to kick-off their campaign to reach the 2014 finals in Brazil.

Amorebieta got the winner for Venezuela after heading the ball into the back of the net from a corner by Arango.

Sabella told a post-match media conference: "We have to analyse what we should improve. The qualifiers are a long tournament and we must improve some aspects.

"Venezuela did not let us build attacking plays. In the first quarter of an hour we played well, but then our form dipped and Venezuela played better."
