South American titans clash for glory

Chile will look to put off-field problems aside for Friday's World Cup qualifier against Copa America champions Uruguay.

West Brom defender Gonzalo Jara, Birmingham winger Jean Beausejour, Atalanta defender Carlos Carmona, Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal and Palmeiras' Jorge Valdivia were all sent home by coach Claudio Borghi for arriving late at the team hotel and "in a state not adequate for the Chilean national team, for a professional player".

It was reported locally that the players were returning from Valdivia's daughter's baptism and had been drinking.

The Argentina-born boss added at a press conference: "I took them away from the squad at about 12.30am (yesterday). Taking them away like I did is horrible.

"I don't know what their alcoholic condition was, but they could not even defend themselves."

Milovan Mirosevic, Felipe Gutierrez, Francisco Silva and Fernando Meneses and Jose Rojas have been called up to the squad as replacements.

Chile have collected three points so far in the South American qualifying zone, with World Cup semi-finalists Uruguay leading the way having picked up four points from their two opening games.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez believes his side will face an offensive Chile team who will provide a test for his side, despite their troubled build-up.

"They will surely attack us a lot," he said. "They are a team built to attack and their coach always says that.

"We'll play the same way we've done recently in order to try to get the three points."

While Argentina take on Bolivia in Buenos Aires, Colombia and Venezuela will be bidding to claim their second wins on the road to the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil.

Colombia defender Luis Amaranto Perea does not expect an easy game in Barranquilla as Venezuela defeated Argentina 1-0 in their second match last month.

He told Futbolred.com: "Venezuela are one of the national teams who have improved most recently. They will not be affected by heat like other teams could be as they are used to it.

"We know we'll face a great team, but we have a number of factors on our side and we must show that on the pitch."

Colombia and Atletico Madrid striker Falcao is an injury doubt after hurting his right leg.

Venezuela boss Cesar Farias has warned his side not to be over-confident after beating Argentina.

"We must be organised," he said. "The group has plenty of expectation, but we'll play 90 minutes against very tough rivals with great players."

Finally, in Asuncion, Paraguay will be looking for their first victory of the qualifying campaign when they take on Ecuador.

The Guaranies lost 2-0 in Peru before drawing 1-1 at home to Uruguay.

"This is a must-win game for us," midfielder Marcelo Estigarribia said. "We have to get into the rivals' box a lot and win."
