Djeparov: We can qualify for World Cup
Uzbekistan captain Server Djeparov believes his team have what it takes to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Uzbekistan have never qualified for the World Cup finals, but are currently in a strong position having qualified for the final round of Asian qualifiers with a game in hand.
The Uzbeks are currently top of Group C, three points ahead of continental giants Japan whom they play in their final third round qualifier on February 29, a sign of how far the White Wolves have come in recent years.
And having witnessed their progress on a first-hand basis, Djeparov believes Uzbekistan can qualify for the World Cup this time around.
"Obviously we have developed into a highly competitive team in Asia," the 29-year-old told FIFA.com.
"We played well against Japan and we dominated both legs against Korea DPR.
"We have a high-quality side, which should be the best squad in [our] history, with a host of overseas-based players and talented youngsters.
"In one word, we can fulfill the World Cup mission this time."
Djeparov, who was recently crowned AFC Player of the Year for the second time in his career, is hoping the current side can make amends for their past failures.
"My chief goal is to help my country secure our first-ever qualification for the FIFA World Cup at Brazil 2014.
"We failed at the final hurdle on the road to the last World Cups so I think we won't miss it for the third consecutive time.
"We have proved we are capable of the task and we must now realise it."
Djeparov has been capped 80 times for Uzbekistan, and has scored seventeen times for the national team.
