Verbeek "extremely happy" with Aussies
Australia coach Pim Verbeek expressed his delight after the Socceroos' 3-1 win over Qatar on Saturday.
Brett Emerton grabbed a brace while Harry Kewell added the other and Khalfan Ibrahim claimed a last-minute consolation for Qatar, who now face a showdown with Iraq in their final Group One game in Dubai.
"I am extremely happy with the way we played today," Verbeek said. "We played with great control, especially in the second half. It was a very comprehensive win for us. I think the second goal really set us free. For us, the most important thing is that we have three points from this match."
"Kewell played a great game, very disciplined throughout the match. It is good to have him in the team.
"I thought even Mark (Schwarzer) had a great game tonight. I think we have done remarkably well in away games despite losing one (to Iraq)."
Despite the impressive result Verbeek insisted there were still areas for improvement, adding: "I think we did make some silly mistakes in the match, like giving away free-kicks and corners, but overall I am fairly satisfied.
"In principle, a goal is a mistake and we forced Qatar to make three mistakes which resulted in great goals for us. We definitely scored quality goals."
Qatar coach Jorge Fossati is confident his side can still qualify to the final round despite the defeat.
"We still have a change to qualify," he said.
"If we beat Iraq, we will do it so I trust my players to deliver. We are disappointed to lose today, but you can't make mistakes against a top team like Australia.
"They have experience of having played in a World Cup before. Also, all of their players play in the European leagues and are very experienced. But we still have a chance to qualify and we will focus on that now.
"Hopefully, we will have learned from our mistakes and we won't make those mistakes against Iraq. Actually, I am confident that we will beat Iraq and qualify for the next stage."
