Also known as Côte d'Ivoire, or Les Éléphants (The Elephants), they played their first international match against Dahomey on 13th April 1960 and emerged 3 – 2 winners.

They lifted the 1992 African Cup of Nations, beating Ghana in a penalty shootout in the final. Other notable performances include two quarter-final appearances in 1998 and 2010.

The 2012 African Cup of Nations will be their 19th appearance in the competition, a long way since their first appearance in 1965, when they were eliminated in the group stages.
