Ted Oh targets first Asian Tour victory
Korea's Ted Oh believes that the wait for his elusive win will end at this week's Brunei Open.
The US$300,000 full field Asian Tour event, which is celebrating its fifth anniversary, will be staged at The Empire Hotel and Country Club and will see Oh take on a stellar field that includes India's Gaganjeet Bhullar, Thailand's Thaworn Wiratchant and Australians David Gleeson, Terry Pilkadaris and defending champion, Rick Kulacz.
The California-based Korean came agonisingly close to his maiden breakthrough when he lost to fellow compatriot Bae Sang-moon in a play-off at the GS Caltex Maekyung Open in May.
Oh was also in contention at last week's Indonesia President Invitational before having to settle for a fourth-place finish.
"As long as I keep giving myself chances, I think the win will come. I was nine-under par for the first two days in Jakarta and shot another nine-under par over the weekend. However my 18-under-par 270 total was not good enough to win the title," said Oh.
The Korean, who is currently 15th on the Asian Tour Order of Merit, is enjoying a welcome return of form and believes that his hard work and determination will eventually pay off.
"I've been playing a lot better than last year and I'm putting better so it's pretty good. I believe I'll achieve my goal if I'm given the chance to play. Hopefully I will come through because I'm been playing for years and I really want to win," said the 32-year-old, who finished in tied-ninth at last year's 2008 Brunei Open.
Besides the elite field, Oh will once again renew rivalry with Bae who is hoping to prove that he can also win an Asian Tour title on foreign soil.
"I think it's just a coincidence that my wins were all at home. I believe I'm good enough to win out of Korea as well," said the three-time Asian Tour winner.
The Korean has chalked up a hat-trick of home victories that include the SK Telecom Open in 2007, the Kolon-Hana Bank Korea Open in 2008 and the GS Caltex Maekyung Open in 2009.
Bae will be banking on the experience gained during his maiden debut at the US Open to steer him towards a commanding performance at the sultanate this week.
"It was definitely a good experience playing against the best at the US Open. That really helped me in my game and I'm confident that the experience gained will put me in contention this week," said Bae posted rounds of 72 and 72 to miss the weekend cut by two shots at the Bethpage State Park's Black course in New York in June.
Meanwhile Asian Tour rookie, James Kamte of South Africa who began the season impressively with his maiden win at the season-opening Asian Tour International has targeted another win to keep him in contention for the Rookie of the Year award.
"I haven't played that much since the win and it would be nice to come out and win again. I've taken some time off and it's now time to start playing," said Kamte.
Brunei Shell Petroleum will title sponsor the Brunei Open while other partners include Brunei Tourism, under the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, The Empire Hotel and Country Club, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Brunei Darussalam Golf Association, Cross Creek and Srixon.
Organisers will also use this year's tournament to promote environmental awareness.
