New broadcast deal for Asian Tour
The Asian Tour has signed a three-year deal with VIASAT to broadcast all Asian Tour live tournaments, highlights and magazine shows.
VIASAT is a leading broadcaster of golf in Scandinavia.
The agreement will commence from the beginning of 2010 through 2012 and VIASAT, which broadcasts from London, will carry Asian Tour coverage across Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
VIASAT also broadcasts tournaments from the US PGA Tour and European Tour and the partnership with the Asian Tour will broaden its coverage of global golf where the Asian Tour is regarded as the third largest Tour in the world.
The Asian Tour also recently announced a three-year agreement with SkySports to beam all Asian Tour shows in the United Kingdom.
The Asian Tour, which is the official sanctioning body for professional golf in Asia, has grown from strength-to-strength over the past decade and top players such as Yang Yong-eun of Korea, Asia's first Major champion after his historic triumph at the US PGA Championship, K.J. Choi, Jeev Milkha Singh, Arjun Atwal, Thongchai Jaidee, and Liang Wen-chong have all emerged from the Asian Tour.
Among the marquee events played in Asia include the Barclays Singapore Open, Ballantine's Championship in Korea, Iskandar Johor Open, UBS Hong Kong Open, HSBC Champions and Maybank Malaysian Open.
Eric Lynge, Senior Director, TV and Commercial Affairs, Asian Tour, said: "The fact that the Asian Tour is being added to Scandinavia's pre-eminent golf broadcaster alongside the European Tour, US PGA Tour and Major golf tournaments is proof of the Asian Tour's stature in the world of golf.
"Through this partnership, VIASAT viewers will be able to see a crop of immensely talented Asian Tour players where big names such as Yang Yong-eun, K.J. Choi, Jeev Milkha Singh and Thongchai Jaidee have honed their games on the Asian Tour and now established themselves firmly on the world stage.
"The growth of Asian golf was solidified with Yang Yong-eun's landmark victory at the US PGA Championship, proving that Asian golf is on a rise and ever improving. The platform which the Asian Tour has provided will continue to deliver opportunities for golfers in Asia to stamp their mark. We will also endeavour to bring the best of Asian golf to global viewers through strong partnerships with leading broadcasters around the globe."
