Rafael Cabrera-Bello has been named European Tour golfer of the month for September for his stunning final round of 60 to win the Austrian Open.

There has never been a 59 on the circuit and the 25-year-old became only the third player in history - Ian Woosnam and Jamie Spence were the others - to claim victory with a closing 60.

The Challenge Tour graduate began the last round eight behind Benn Barham, but grabbed 11 birdies and even had a 30-foot eagle putt at the last for 59.

"It is a huge honour to win this award," he said. "It is a pleasure to see my name alongside many great players that have won this award in the past and it gives me a lot of motivation and confidence for the future."

Other contenders for the award included Swede Alex Noren and South African James Kingston, winners respectively of the European Masters and Mercedes-Benz Championship, and England's Chris Wood, who won 4.5 points from a possible five for Britain and Ireland at the Vivendi Trophy match against Continental Europe.
