Hanson keeps eye on Kaymer
Martin Kaymer's return from the broken toes he suffered in a go-kart crash was being closely watched at the Castello Masters in Spain.
Swede Peter Hanson has pulled out of next week's Singapore Open, not only to play this week, but also to be on standby for the Volvo World Match Play.
The 16-man field there includes not only Kaymer, but also Paul Casey, another who has been out of action for more than two months because of a torn rib muscle.
Anybody reaching the final of the Match Play will have to play 36 holes three times in four days and that is asking a lot of Kaymer and Casey so soon on their return to action.
Hanson's fear, though, has to be that, with guaranteed last place money of almost £110,000 at Finca Cortesin near Marbella, the pair will give it a go even if they then have to withdraw.
That would bring back memories of the 1996 Volvo Masters when injured Robert Allenby hit his opening drive 30 yards and then quit.
Allenby, who suffered a fractured sternum in a car crash a month earlier, had flown from Australia to Spain for the shot, which was necessary so he could collect an Order of Merit bonus of around £60,000 that he then gave to charity.
Colin Montgomerie thought the incident brought golf into disrepute and imagine the row if the same thing happened next week with the money on offer counting towards the money list.
Hanson had a change of plan when contacted about being the Match Play standby.
He had not originally entered the Castellon tournament, but was seeking a late invitation when he guaranteed himself a place in the event with a top-10 finish at the Portugal Masters.
The added complication for him, however, is that if Kaymer or Casey pull out of next week before Monday morning, their spots would first be offered to Ian Poulter or Robert Karlsson respectively.
However, they are currently entered for the Singapore Open.
