Rose and Wood set to blossom
The talented English duo of Justin Rose and Chris Wood have added further star quality to the Barclays Singapore Open.
They will join an already stellar line-up which includes multiple Major winners Phil Mickelson, Padraig Harrington and Ernie Els.
The US$5 million tournament at Sentosa Golf Club from October 29-November 1 is being co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour for the first time positioning it as an important stop on the new Race to Dubai.
"Justin Rose draws crowds wherever he plays and Chris Wood is one of the most exciting young players on the circuit," said Robert Morrice, Chairman and Chief Executive of Barclays Asia.
"Their presence helps ensure the Barclays Singapore Open boasts the strongest field of any tournament in Asia so far this year."
Rose has played the majority of his golf on the US PGA Tour this year but is making a late-season push on the European Tour.
A top-10 finish in last week's Portugal Masters saw him move to 50th spot on the rankings with the leading 60 players teeing it up at next month's Dubai World Championship.
The 2007 European number one has been battling back problems, which kept him out of a number of tournaments over the past two years but recent results show he is approaching top form.
The crowd-pleaser first came to prominence in the 1998 British Open at Royal Birkdale when he tied for fourth spot as an amateur.
He turned professional the next day and after a torrid start with a run of missed cuts has developed into a world class player with four European Tour wins to his credit, including the Volvo Masters in 2007 that saw him clinch the number one spot.
Wood's early career has mirrored that of his fellow countryman. He caught the eye at last year's British Open when, as an amateur, he beat the majority of the elite field to finish joint fifth at Royal Birkdale.
By way of an encore, the tousle-haired 21-year-old Englishman played himself into contention down the stretch in this year's British Open at Turnberry before settling for joint third spot behind winner Stewart Cink.
Several other top-10 finishes this year have given rise to the opinion that it is only a matter of time before Wood enters the winner's enclosure. Currently he is 40th on the European Tour's Race to Dubai.
Rose and Wood face a field of dreams at the Barclays Singapore Open with world number two Mickelson, Harrington and Els being joined by fellow Major winners Geoff Ogilvy of Australia and New Zealander Michael Campbell, both former US Open champions.
Asia's challenge will be led by Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee, who is enjoying a fantastic season with victories in the Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia Open and the Ballantine's Championship, both joint-sanctioned events by the Asian Tour and European Tour.
Singapore's national Open was not played between 2002 and 2004, but returned to the Asian Tour schedule in 2005 thanks to the support of Sentosa and efforts of the event promoter World Sport Group.
This year's Barclays Singapore Open will once again be broadcast live for all four days on the ESPN STAR Sports network.
