Schwartzel hails 'phenomenal' day
New Masters champion Charl Schwartzel hailed a "phenomenal" final day at Augusta as he became the third South African to wear the Green Jacket.
On the 50th anniversary of compatriot Gary Player becoming the first international champion at Augusta, Schwartzel shot a final round six-under to finish two shots clear of the field. The 26-year-old, who also emulates the success of countryman Trevor Immelman, got of to a stunning start as he chipped in for a birdie at the first before eagling the third. However it was on the home run that he pulled clear of Adam Scott and Jason Day, with four consecutive birdie putts from the 15th securing him the title. And Schwartzel, who received the famous Green Jacket from Phil Mickelson, was left blown away by his success. "It was just a phenomenal day," said Schwartzel. "There were so many roars and the atmosphere was incredible. "I was getting tight coming down the 15th. Adam Scott was making birdies and I needed to do something. "But I managed to hit really good iron shots made some really good putts coming in. "Walking up 18 was such a special feeling. I only had a one-shot lead, so you don't want to get too excited about it. You've still got to win the golf tournament. But it just really felt good. "I don't think that I have ever done so much praying on a golf course in my life!"
