Struggling Rose eyeing break

Justin Rose put a question mark over his planned trip to China next week after crashing to an opening 80 in the Volvo Masters.

Last year's winner was in last place on nine over par after the opening round and when asked about going to Shanghai for the HSBC Champions tournament said: "Maybe. The only reason to play there is to get a result under my belt, but at the moment it feels like a waste of time.

"That was terrible. I'm just playing poorly right now - everything is hard work."

Rose, with only three top 10 finishes to his name all year, is in this week's 57-strong field only because he won the title last November.

While everyone else is in Europe's top 60 he is 81st and unless he climbs 30 places his defence of the Harry Vardon Trophy will be the worst since Dale Hayes in 1976.

And in the South African's defence he played only four events that season, whereas Rose has already played 13, one more than the number with which he took top spot in 2007.

Already five over when he came to the long 17th he pitched over the green and then thinned a chip into the lake.

That led to a triple bogey eight and he dropped another stroke on the last.

"I can't wait to not play again for a long while," added Rose, who blames poor scheduling for his disappointing season on both sides of the Atlantic.
