Mamat all set for home success

Singapore ace golfer Mardan Mamat says he is coming into just the right form on the eve of two major events on home soil.

Singapore's number one will play in this week's Mercedes-Benz Masters Singapore tomorrow at Laguna National Golf and Club and next week competes in the Barclays Singapore Open.

Mamat, who posted two top-10 finishes on the Asian Tour last month, also turned 41 last Friday and is eager to taste victory again.

"Well I haven't won for a while so that is my main goal. All parts of my game are very strong. I have been working and practicing a lot. However, there is always room for improvement. It's my first event on the Mercedes-Benz Tour this year so I am looking forward to it and it will be great warm up for next week's Barclays Singapore Open," said Mamat.

His last win came here at Laguna National in the 2006 Singapore Masters but he showed glimpses of his best form in October when he came joint third in the Midea Classic in China and finished equal ninth in the Johor Open last week.

The Masters Course is being used for this week's event, which was the scene of his famous win two years ago.

He said: "I haven't played here for a year. It's great to see the course in such good shape, especially the greens. Of course all the fantastic memories are still there and I would like to have some more. When I won the Singapore Masters I finished on 12 under. I am not sure about this week - a lot depends on the conditions and the wind."

His recent performances are welcomed after having struggled in Europe this season.

"Well I haven't really played well in Europe which has been disappointing. I have tried to take advantage of my exemption there. The last month I have very played well. I have been trying to relax more to take the pressure off and that has helped," added Mamat, who has been paired with Filipino Juvic Pagunsan and talented Thai teenager Kiradech Aphibarnrat in the first two rounds.

Mamat's compatriot Lam Chih Bing, who won the Mercedes-Benz Masters Indonesia in May which was the Tour's season opener, is also competing.

A total of 32 Singaporeans are competing out of a field of 115.

Malaysians Danny Chia and Perisamy Gunasegaran, Felix Casas from the Philippines, Maan Nasim and Ilyasak from Indonesia and Thai golfers Panuwat Muenlek and Nakul Vichitryuthasastr are some of the other leading players who have made the trip to Laguna National.

The event marks the seventh leg on this year's Tour and will be a sentimental return to Singapore.

The Tour visited Laguna National last year for the Laguna National ASEAN Championship, which was won by Filipino Angelo Que. Mamat ended in joint fifth position.

Que, who currently leads to Mercedes-Benz Tour Order of Merit with two wins and two second place finishes, is unable to compete due to other playing commitments.
