Non-stop driving record set in S'pore
Golfers made it into Singapore's Book of Records for the first ever 24-hour non-stop golf driving activity.
It took 520 participants and 67,840 golf balls whizzing non-stop through the sky at Toa Payoh Golf Range on Saturday through to Sunday.
The event, which began on 6 June 2009, 12 noon till 7 June 2009, 12 noon was organised by the North East Constituency Sports Clubs and the People's Association.
They were also supported by the North East Community Development Council as part of the 3-month long Community Sports Festival 2009, which aims to bring people together through sporting activities and create opportunities for people to make friends.
For Mr Gilbert Tang, 62 years old and self-employed, who lives in Tampines, the event was an affordable and rare opportunity for him to try his first attempt at golf with his wife. Mr Tang said: "I have seen people playing golf on television, but I have never thought that I would wield a golf club myself someday. I'm glad that there is a community event of this nature which allows me to try-out a new sport with friends and neighbours, and also enjoy a fun family day out."
Guest-of-Honour Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Home Affairs and Member of Parliament for Tampines GRC, kicked off the heartlands golf driving event on Saturday.
Chairman of the organising committee of this event, Mr Dick Hui, BBM said: "We are jubilant that the Community Sport Festival @ North East Non-stop Golf Drive Event successfully set a 24-hour record in the Singapore Book of Records. This was only achievable with the support of the residents and community coming together to play a part." The same organising committee also set the record for the longest Futsal matches played in Singapore during the last year's Community Sports Festival.
