Liang secures historic win
Liang Wenchong became the first Chinese champion on the OneAsia Tour by winning the Midea China Classic.
Liang Wenchong secured a historic win at the Midea China Classic today by becoming the first Chinese champion on the OneAsia Tour.
The former Asia number one carded a three-under-par 68 for a 13 under 270 four-day total that saw him claim a comfortable four-stroke win over compatriot Zhang Lianwei, who shot a two under 69.
Australian Peter Wilson's late charge of three birdies on his last three holes ensured he returned to the clubhouse with a 64 for a share of third place on nine under alongside compatriot Matthew Millar (65) and New Zealander Michael Long (68).
Liang had started the day as overnight leader and further improved his position with birdies on the first, third, eighth and 10th holes with just a bogey on the ninth the only blot on his scorecard.
"I'm really excited as it's my first win in the Midea and I had a lot of fans supporting me today," said Liang.
"I felt a lot of pressure, especially on the front nine, but even when I was a few strokes ahead, I had to concentrate hard to maintain my game and stay in front.
"This win is a lot more than a trophy and a paycheque. This means so much at this time and I see it as a win for Chinese professionals. Hopefully it will draw a lot more attention to golf in the country after it became an Olympic sport."
The next event on the OneAsia tour is the Australian Open in December.
