Masters delight for amateur Han

Han Chang-won secured a five-stroke victory at the inaugural Asian Amateur Championship - and with it an invitation to the US Masters.

The South Korean teenager began the final round with a two-shot lead over compatriot Eric Chun and that increased to three when the latter bogeyed the first.

Han then fired a superb eagle on the second and although he bogeyed the fourth, he picked up further shots on the sixth and seventh to reach the turn in 34.

The 17-year-old moved further ahead with birdies on the 11th and 12th and, although he dropped three shots coming home, it was not enough to deny him victory with a final round of 70.

The win also earned Han and second-placed Chun, who carded a one-over 73 today, a spot in International Final Qualifying for The Open at St Andrews next year.

"I knew I was leading by five or six after the first nine holes but I was trying not to think about the result," Han said.

"Anything can happen in a round of golf and I was very nervous towards the end. I have to admit that it was the thought of playing in the Masters that made me nervous.

"I had never even thought it would be possible for me to be playing in the Masters as an amateur.

"I would like to play with KJ Choi or Tiger (Woods) in the Masters."

Han's success means there will be three teenagers competing at Augusta in April.

Fellow Korean An Byeong-hun, 17, qualified by winning the US Amateur title and British Amateur winner Matteo Manassero of Italy is only 16.
