Poulter positve ahead of World Cup

Ian Poulter has promised an aggressive approach to bring World Cup success for England at Mission Hills this week alongside Ross Fisher.

Last year Poulter and Fisher teamed up to finish sixth following a gallant final round foursomes, although the duo were 12 shots adrift of winners Sweden.

But Poulter returns after ending his three-year wait for a title in Singapore at the start of October before recording back-to-back top-10 finishes in Hong Kong and last week in Dubai.

Fisher, meanwhile, landed the Volvo World Match Play Championship crown in Spain during the same week his team-mate triumphed on Sentosa.

"I like the way Ross hits it, he is a strong player," world number 13 Poulter told Press Association Sport.

"It's certainly nice to play foursomes with him, he hits it long and straight which is great.

"Hopefully I can give him plenty of chances and vice-versa.

"We shot seven under in foursomes last year on Sunday to run straight up that leaderboard so we know we can play in foursomes.

"I just think we will need to attack the better ball format and if we can get the most out of that and if we can shoot eight, nine, 10-under-par in that format, I think we have got a great chance."

World number seven and Players Championship winner Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson, who only came back in October after four months out with an eye injury, return to defend their title starting tomorrow with fourballs.

Last Sunday in Japan, Karlsson lost a play-off to European Challenge Tour number one Edoardo Molinari at the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament.

The 28 teams will switch to alternate shot foursomes on Friday with the same schedule repeating at the weekend over the heavily bunkered Olazabal Course at Mission Hills Golf Club.

The impressive line-up sees world number eight Sergio Garcia form a formidable Spanish partnership with Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, with Ireland boasting the equally impressive combination of in-form Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.

Martin Kaymer features for Germany and US PGA Championship winner YE Yang will look to lead South Korea to the title.

"There are a lot of strong teams and it is going to be a lot of fun," added Poulter, who is looking forward to partnering Fisher.

"We get on nicely, we have only known each other for a few years, but we get on well and that's always nice.

"His win at the Match Play is good timing so hopefully it will also work very well."
