Langer, Pavin share Senior Open lead
Bernhard Langer and Corey Pavin share the lead at the halfway stage of the Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie.
Langer, the former European Ryder Cup captain, added a 71 to his opening 67 while Pavin, America's skipper at Celtic Manor in October, carded a second successive round of 69 to sit on four under par.
It could have been so much better for the German, who reached six under after an outward 34 but dropped shots at 13 and 16 saw him slip back into the pack.
"I could have putted a bit better," Langer said. "The ball did not drop for me like it did in the first round."
And it was similar story for the American, who picked up four birdies in the first 17 holes only to find water on the difficult 18th and record a double-bogey six.
With the wind getting up on Scottish links, anything below par represented a quality score and it came no better than Ian Woosnam's 67, which saw him vault into a tie for third just one shot back.
The Welshman, who led the successful European Ryder Cup team at the K-Club in Dublin four years ago, was joined by a trio of Americans on three under par for the championship - Jay Haas, Larry Mize and Dan Forsman.
Former Open champion Mark Calcavecchia is just two shots off the lead after a second round of 70.
However, there was disappointment for Sam Torrance, whose 77 included three sixes and was one of the worst rounds of the day.
