Kalmadi: IOA okay to hand back hockey

Suresh Kalmadi, in an exclusive chat with espnstar.com's Rajarshi Gupta said that the IOA can hand back hockey.

The Indian Olympic Association took over hockey after the Indian Hockey Federation was dissolved last year and established an ad-hoc committee.

However, some state associations have demanded that the game be handed back by the IOA to the IHF.

Kalmadi, chief of the IOA does not seem to be in a hurry and merely said the IOA would hand over the reins to the right people at the right time.

"I have no vested interest"

"I have no interest to keep hockey under my control. I have got enough on my plate. I have the Commonwealth Games to take care of the IOA to run."

The IOA and the International Olympic Association want that hockey, being a national game, should be brought back to health.

"I will hand it over to right people at the right time."

Kalmadi said the World Cup would certainly be held in India in less than a year's time as scheduled.

"We have made sure that the World Cup would be held in India in 2010."

So many positives

The IOA chief counted out the positives Indian hockey has gone through after the IHF was dissolved, though India went down 2-3 in the Gentings Cup under-21 final against Pakistan.

"We have been able to establish good relations with the government. Former Olympians have been appointed as selectors, there is good networking between players, administrators and officials and the senior and junior performances have been outstanding.

"Our responsibility is to make sure hockey is in the right track."

Process on to find foreign coach

Kalmadi said India would soon have a foreign coach for the hockey team and the process to find one is still on.

"Several candidates are being interviewed. The process for the appointment of the foreign coach is going simultaneously. There will be a result soon."

Kalmadi also ruled out any rift with Randhir Singh who quit the ad-hoc committee.

"Look, his quitting was a mutual decision between us. There are so many things to look after and it is not necessary that everyone has to concentrate on the same thing."

Kalmadi does not sound like he would blink soon but the tussle continues between the heavyweights in hockey.
