Olympians hail India's triumph
Olympian Sylvanus Dung Dung hailed India's historic triumph in the Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia on Sunday after more than a decade.
Sylvanus said he was thrilled to learn the team has opted for a "centre forward", indicating return to the traditional 5-3-2 attacking formation."I don't know the exact formation. But I was very happy to read the word centre forward in today's newspapers, which points to the attacking formation," Dung Dung told PTI.
He was referring to centre forward Shivender Singh scoring the third and final goal to wrap up title after 13 years.
India won the cup defeating Malaysia 3-1 yesterday.
Going back to his playing days, the proud member of the 1980 Moscow Olympic gold winning team said India had always inflicted problems on opponents with this "mighty formation".
"During my entire playing career we played under this formation which proved lethal against the opponents," added Dung Dung, who played as a back when India had dashing defenders like Aslam Sher Khan and Michael Kindo.
"But one stray title cannot lift Indian hockey. The powers-that-be should review tournaments, find the strengths and weaknesses of the team and work on them to keep up the good work," suggested Dung Dung.
