Australia tame Germany

Australia got the better of Germany, trouncing them 2-0 at the Champions Trophy in the Olympic Park in Sydney.

The first half did not see any goals but two nice goals in the second half were enough for Australia to celebrate a victory for the first time in two years in the Champions Trophy.

“We played above our own expectations so it’s a great result. It was a fast-paced, tough game so to get away with a win is the perfect start to the tournament”, said Hockeyroo coach Frank Murray after the game.

Neither team had much to show at the Beijing Olympics and wanted to prove that they can do better at this Champions Trophy.

The Aussies were also pepped up by a substantial home crowd in Sydney.

Australia scored early in the second half when Emily Hurtz converted a rebound in a crowded circle. Team-captain Madonna Blyth was very happy to have a new goal scorer with the 19 years old Hurtz: ““We need goal scorers; we’ve lost a few strikers so to have Emily playing so well is great for the team right now.”

Madonna Blyth increased the lead with a nice goal. Blyth dived into a pass from outside the circle and deflected it into the goal.

The hosts just did not lose the momentum from there and were able to put it across the Germans in style.
