"No doubt about India hosting 2010 WC"
Despite all the chaos going on in Indian hockey, the FIH President Leandro Negre seems confident of India successfully hosting 2010 WC.
Newly formed body -- Hockey India finds it difficult to get the support of the state units to conduct elections, and is also having a tough time in its efforts to merge the men's and women's bodies.
The state is so bad that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has directed the state Olympic associations to accord affiliation to only those bodies that are recognised by a four-member committee.
However, if Negre is to be believed, everything is under control.
Though, India is yet to complete its preparations for the upcoming World Cup, the International Hockey Federation President said he is not looking beyond New Delhi as the World Cup host city.
"There is no standby venue as far as FIH is concerned. Keeping Malaysia as a stand-by is not required any more. The stadium in New Delhi is all ready to host the matches. We will start with matches to test quality of the turf of the venue in December-January," said Negre at sidelines of the unveiling ceremony of the title sponsors of the 2010 World Cup - Hero Honda.
Hoping that India will be able to revive its hockey by hosting the tournament, the Negre said, "The federation is hopeful that hosting of the 2010 World Cup will help Indian hockey. For the global development of the sport, it is important that Indian hockey should play to its potential. India is one of the most important members of the FIH family."
Regarding the security during the World Cup, the Spaniard said, "I am very happy with the security arrangements. Although, the security will always be an issue but I have been assured by the association that the Indian police and the government are taking all possible steps to deal with the security problems."
Whether there is any deadline set by the FIH on when the elections are going to take place, Negre said, "Obviously, we have set a deadline and the elections will have to take place before the World Cup. I am sure Hockey India and the state units will solve the problem and will conduct the elections soon. I have no fears or suspicion about them not resolving the issue. I am pretty confident that things will be sorted out."
