FIH to trial umpire review system

FIH to trial umpire review system

The umpire review system is set to make its debut as the IHF has decided to put it on trial in the Men's Champions Trophy.

As per the system, the teams will be allowed one referral per match if they feel the umpire's decision on goals, penalty corners and penalty strokes has gone against them. The captain would be authorised to request for a review.

If the referral goes in favour of the team asking for it, then they are allowed to request for another referral for the rest of the match.

Under the current system, match umpires can already refer decisions to the video umpire if they are not convinced about awarding or disallowing goals.

If the system works well in the Champions Trophy, it could be introduced in next year's World Cup to be held here from February 28 to March 13.

"The primary purpose of Video Umpire is to reduce major errors which may impact upon the result of a match. These errors will chiefly occur within the 23 metre areas, and Team Referrals are not just limited to goal or non-goal decisions," FIH Competitions Committee Chairman, Ken Read said in a statement

"We will review the results of the trial following the Champions Trophy, with a view to having the best Video Umpire system in place that we can for the Men's and Women's 2010 World Cups," he added.
