Argentina crowned champions
India failed to take their fourth Azlan Shah Cup Hockey crown after losing 1-2 to Argentina.
SINGAPORE (espnstar.com) - India failed to take their fourth Azlan Shah Cup Hockey crown after losing 1-2 to Argentina, who claim their first cup win as a result.
India started the game well and took the lead in the 11th minute when Sandeep Singh converted a penalty corner.
The lead only lasted four minutes though, as Argentina equalised in the 15th minute through a Mario Almada field goal.
India continued to create chances, but failed to convert them, leaving the scores tied 1-1 at the break.
After the interval, both sides played cautiously, with neither side taking the initiative. This proved to be a mistake for the Indian side, as they were clearly more dangerous going forwards.
The match went into extra-time where India were made to pay for their reluctance to go forwards as Almada scored his second of the match to clinch Argentina's inaugural Azlan Shah title.
Sandeep Singh finished the tournament as the top scorer with nine goals to his name.
In the 3rd-4th playoff, New Zealand defeated Pakistan to claim third position in this year's event.
