Glover maintains US Open lead

Front-running Lucas Glover maintained his advantage as the second round of the rain-hit US Open resumed at Bethpage Black today.

2003 Masters champion Mike Weir had shot an opening 64 on Friday but let his lead slip as the second round began last night, dropping shots at the fifth and ninth holes before play was halted for the day in near darkness to fall to four under.

That was two shots behind overnight leader Glover but Weir quickly made amends with a birdie at the par-four 10th as play restarted to narrow the American's lead to one shot.

Then Glover birdied his 15th hole, the par-four sixth, to move to seven under.

Weir joined second placed Ricky Barnes on five under with Japan's Azuma Yano and Peter Hanson of Sweden at four under and former Open champions David Duval and Todd Hamilton at three under along with Australia's Adam Scott.

England's Ross Fisher resumed play on Long Island trying to stay as far from the hole as possible.

He had shot a level-par 70 in his first round and made further progress when he was sent straight back out to start round two with three birdies and a bogey over his first 10 holes.

He did it thanks to a change in strategy that saw him prefer long putts to those from close range.

"It was weird because I was missing a few short ones so I thought I'd start hitting it to 30 feet and I started holing them," Fisher said.

"I hit it to 25 feet on 10 and holed it; six feet on 11 and missed it; then holed a 35-footer for bogey on 12. It is a funny old game as they."

The overnight pause did not do Fisher any favours, though, and he resumed with a bogey at the par-four second hole to slip to one under.
