Popovich makes title declaration
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich doesn’t say much, but when he does it’s big news – even if he is just kidding around.
Popovich made a mock declaration during an interview with NBA.com, saying, "If we don't win it, I should probably be fired."
Coach Pop was visiting his summer league team in Las Vegas when he fielded questions from the official NBA news outlet. Popovich said that he was very satisfied with San Antonio's summer dealings, adding that the team has reloaded through trades, the NBA Draft and the free agency.
The Spurs added explosive swingman Richard Jefferson and veteran power forward Antonio McDyess, two players with playoff experience, while staying with the Tim Duncan-Tony Parker-Manu Ginobili triumvirate.
San Antonio also got the steal of the draft, selecting DeJuan Blair in the second round.
However, Popovich did concede that the Spurs would contend on if Duncan and Ginobili remained healthy next season.
