Witter calls out Khan's number

Witter calls out Khan's number

Junior Witter claims he would comfortably brush aside new WBA light-welterweight champion Amir Khan.

The Bolton star claimed his maiden world title at the MEN Arena last week when he claimed a highly impressive victory on points over Ukraine's Andreas Kotelnik.

Khan, still only 22, even said after the triumph that he expects plenty of rivals to come searching for a fight and now Witter - and also Dimitry Salita - have already made their intentions known.

Witter, a former WBC light-welterweight champion, has talked up a potential clash with Khan although it would depend on the outcome of his bout with Devon Alexander later this month in which he will bid to reclaim that belt.

"Khan looked OK, but I'd take care of him in just a few rounds," Witter told The Mirror.

"His people tried to get me to fight him earlier this summer - I doubt they will remember my name when I win the title again."

Meanwhile, undefeated Salita (30-0-1, 16KOs) is the mandatory challenger for the WBA belt, and as a resident of New York he would be an attractive first defence for Khan, who harbours hopes of making it big in America.

"Amir Khan has a belt that belongs to me," Salita told secondsout.com.

"Amir Khan fought a very good tactical fight, and Amir is a good fighter, and Freddy Roach devised a very good plan for him.

"I see things in Khan's style that I can take advantage of.

"Amir has to step up to the plate and fight me. I look forward to the opportunity. I want to bring the title to Brooklyn, New York."
