Mushtaq predicts Pak-Eng final

Former Pakistan Test leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed predicted a Pakistan-England final in the Champions Trophy.

The diminutive bowler, who is presently working with the English side as their spin consultant, said Pakistan and England looked the two best sides in the eight nation competition.

"Their biggest advantage is they are free of any major fitness problems with their players, a problem that has affected all other teams either before or during the competition," he said.

"They have the best bowling options in pace and spin. They are the sides with the bowling to cope with any pitch conditions. And I see them playing in the final as they will top their groups," he added.

New Zealand has been the worst hit with injuries losing Jacob Oram, Jesse Ryder and Daryl Tuffey during the tournament while Australia have lost Michael Clarke.

India also came into the tournament without senior players Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan and then lost the services of Yuvraj Singh.

Mushtaq, who is presently in Lahore on a vacation from his coaching stint with the England team, said he was not surprised by the success of Pakistan and England.

"I'm not surprised that India has struggled"

"I am not surprised that India has struggled because they are missing Sehwag and Yuvraj while they made a mistake not play Pragyan Ojha," he said. .

The leg-spinner said the England and Wales Cricket Board has extended his coaching contract which was initially for three months but he could not accept a full time job with them due to his family commitments.

Mushtaq lamented until now neither the Pakistan Cricket Board nor any other institution in the country had bothered to utilise his experience and coaching skills.

"That is when the coaching offer came from the ECB. I accepted it and I think I made the right decision since it is an exciting job working with some very good spinners."

Mushtaq said he saw a lot of spin bowling potential in England, far better than other countries.

"Adil Rashid is an exciting young leg-spinner who can bat well and field excellently as well. You have Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann and there are couple of exciting young spinners playing county cricket so all in all it is a great scene for England cricket as far as spin talent is concerned," he added.
