Goa Super Sixes: Teams fight hard

Leading corporate teams in India participated in the Goa Super Sixes and here are the results from the first day.

Match 1 – Cornish Pirates and Future Kings
 

The Super Sixes Tournament opened in style with a classic showdown between the Cornish Pirates and the Future Kings. The Future Kings boasted of some legendary players with Sandeep Patil and Dilip Vengsarkar. The Future Kings batted first and posted a huge total of 84 in the stipulated 5 overs. Sandeep Patil scoring a typical quickfire innings of 32 runs off just 8 balls. Cornish Pirates had a mountain to climb to win this game. Unfortunately Cornish Pirates lost wickets in each over thus falling way short of their run chase scoring only 58 runs in Future’ reply.
 
Match 2 – The second game was billed as the ashes of the GSS Tournament with Bombay Bombers taking on the Delhi Devils in a mouthwatering clash. Delhi batted first posting a commendable 57 runs with Ajay Jadeja blazing away to a tornado innings of 22 runs off 7 balls. Suresh Menon could not find the right line and length giving away 19 runs in his over. In their chase, Bombay reached the total in a whirlwind 3.3 overs losing only 3 wickets in the process. Ali scored 29 runs in the run chase which consisted 4 consecutive sixes in one over. The highlight of the match however was Kapil Dev taking a spectacular catch diving to the ground and picking the balls inches from the ground – glimpses of the his good old playing days to dismiss a shocked Atul Wassan..
 
Match 3 Pinc Panthers and ITA TIGERS
Pinc Panthers chose to bat first.  Pinc Panthers set up a target of 58 helped by Saurabh Daftary’s knock of 21 runs. In reply, ITA got off to flyer with Indraneil Dasgupta scoring 30 runs off just 7 balls. As a rule batters have to retire after they complete 30 runs.
 
Match 4
Ghodawat Stars and Future Kings
Batting first Ghodawat Stars were helped by Vivek Salgaonkar and Suraj burse to set up a competitive total. Future Kings could only muster a meager 44 runs in their run chase against the stars 90 runs.
 
Match 5 - Delhi Devils and Pinc Panthers

Pinc Panthers batted first and just about managed to score in double digits scoring a very poor 17 runs – the lowest total of the GSS tournament. Delhi Devils strolled to their total in just two overs adding to the Pinc Panthers poor performance in the first game as well.
 
Match 6 – Bombay Bombers and ITA Tigers
ITA tigers scored a competitive of 51 runs. Indraneil picked up from where he left off in the first game by scoring a quick 22 runs off 10 balls. The total seemed too much for Bombay Bombers who could only manage 39 runs. Manav Gohil doing the damage with his bowling performance picking up 2 crucial wickets of Atul Wassan and Shailendra Singh.
 
Match 7 – Ghodawat Stars vs Cornish Pirates

Batting first, Ghodawats posted the biggest total in the GSS tournament scoring a mammoth 116 runs in their allotted 5 overs. Opening the batting, Salil Ankola and Vijender Singh scored 35 and 30 respectively runs and retiring. Suraj Burse also came to the party getting in on the act scoring 35 runs later on in the innings with 5 hits out of the ground. Cornish Pirates were fighting a losing battle and it showed as they folded up at 21 runs.
 
Match 8 – Bombay Bombers and Pinc Panthers
Bombay batted first a target of 100 runs – keeping in sync with the trend of high totals. SS scored 33 runs with 4 consecutive sixes and Ali scored 30 runs also laced with 4 massive sixes. Things got worse for the Pinc Panthers in the GSS as they got only score 59 runs in their run chase. Pinc Panthers bowing out of the GSS tournament having lost all their games.
 
Match 9 – Delhi Devil and ITA
As was the case with beach cricket, the GSS tournament saved the best game for last. ITA batted first and scored 97 runs. Indraneil again coming good with 32 runs. Rohit Roy showed that he was not going to be left behind by scoring 31 runs himself. Delhi Devil came close to the total and the match had a nail-biting last over finish. Delhi Devils falling short in the end by just 8 runs. Ajay Jadeja laid for foundation for Delhi’s run chase scoring a quick fire 31 and retiring off just 8 balls.
