Napoli 2-1 Bologna

Napoli 2-1 Bologna

Christian Maggio's injury-time winner gave Napoli's new boss Walter Mazzarri the most enthralling of starts.

Having gone behind to Adailton's first-half free-kick, Fabio Quagliarella levelled for the home side midway through the second half.

The game looked to be petering out and heading for a draw until Maggio found himself perfectly placed to tap in a dramatic later winner and hand his new boss a winning start.

Bologna caused themselves early problems as a 10th-minute Miguel Britos lobbed backpass forced Emiliano Viviano into an acrobatic save to concede the corner, before the goalkeeper was again on hand to punch the resulting kick away.

Just four minutes later, however, Bologna were in front.

Walter Gargano needlessly brought down striker Adailton on the edge of the box and the forward dusted himself off to stroke a sublime free-kick beyond the stranded Morgan De Sanctis.

Napoli were spurred into action and Quagliarella fired goalwards from close range only for Britos to block his powerful shot with his boot.

On the half-hour mark Quagliarella tried his luck once more - this time from 25 yards - but goalkeeper Viviano was able to get down and collect the ball comfortably.

Five minutes later Napoli's Hugo Campagnaro tried his luck from 35 yards out, finding himself in space and smashing a powerful strike which went narrowly wide.

Bologna ended the half on a high, however, as Marco Di Vaio just failed to steer Cristiano Zenoni's right-wing cross beyond De Sanctis in the 43rd minute.

The second half began in a low-key manner with Napoli almost trying too hard and undermining their attacking cause.

In the 62nd minute Campagnaro handled the ball from around 35 yards out, leading to a Bologna free-kick, but Nicola Mingazzini's effort went flying into the stands.

Suddenly spurred into life, Napoli talisman Ezequiel Lavezzi forced a save from Viviano in the 70th minute as the keeper saved with his foot before pouncing to grasp Paolo Cannavaro's header in the middle of the area.

A minute later Gargano commandeered a free-kick from distance but could only hit the wall, earning a corner.

But in the 72nd minute the equaliser finally came. From the resulting corner, Bologna were unable to clear their lines and allowed Quagliarella to steal in and gleefully poke home the loose ball.

Di Vaio nearly regained the lead for his side with 11 minutes left, going one-on-one with De Sanctis after Marcelo Zalayeta's classy ball. However, the veteran striker saw his decent shot saved brilliantly by the goalkeeper and the scores remained level.

The same player carved out a chance for himself seconds later, taking on two defenders but failing to keep the ball down with his shot.

In the 85th minute Bologna coach Giuseppe Papadopulo was given his marching orders for complaining bitterly about several minor incidents.

And his misery increased tenfold a minute into added time. Lavezzi worked his magic down the left wing before swinging in a low cross for Maggio to tap in from close range, sending the home fans wild.
