Super Bowl: A decade of greatness

Super Bowl: A decade of greatness

ESPNSTAR.com brings you a recap of all the Super Bowls that were played between 2000 and 2009.

Super Bowl XLIII Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Florida

Pittsburgh Steelers-27 Arizona Cardinals-23

Coming into Super Bowl XLIII as the clear favorites, the Pittsburgh Steelers were given an almighty test by the Arizona Cardinals. After beating the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and the Philadelphia Eagles to reach Super Sunday in improbable fashion, the offensive-minded Cardinals found themselves leading late in the fourth quarter. Despite another great performance by Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald (127 yards, 2 TD's), Ben Roethlisberger proved once again why he is one of the best quarterbacks in the game by orchestrating a game-winning drive that ended with a touchdown catch for Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes. The win gave Roethlisberger his second Super Bowl title and made the Steelers franchise the first to win six Super Bowls.

Super Bowl XLII University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, Arizona

New York Giants-17 New England Patriots-14

The 2008 regular season was a historic one for the New England Patriots: an undefeated 16-0 season, 23 touchdown catches for Randy Moss and an MVP award for Tom Brady. Even with all of their regular season success, the Patriots could not capture the season's most coveted prize - the NFL title. Eli Manning led a magical drive that included David Tyree making one of the best catches in NFL history. The possession ended with a 13 yard touchdown pass from Manning to Plaxico Burress with 35 seconds remaining to give the Giants the lead for good. The breathtaking win for New York ruined New England's chances of becoming the first team to complete a perfect 19-0 season and left fans around the world in shock.

Super Bowl XLI Dolphin Stadium, Miami, Florida

Indianapolis Colts-29 Chicago Bears-17

Peyton Manning had the statistics, he had the regular season wins; the only blot on his copybook was that he could not win a Super Bowl - until Super Bowl XLI. The Bears could not have asked for a better start, as Devin Hester continued to build on his record-setting season by taking the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown. However, Chicago were mightily outplayed from that point on. Peyton Manning was very efficient - completing 25 of 38 passes - and Dominic Rhodes was fantastic, gaining 113 yards on the ground and scoring the go-ahead touchdown for Indianapolis. The Colts' defence shut down Rex Grossman and the Bears, and their special teams limited Hester to only one other return - a three yard gain off of a punt. Manning was named Super Bowl MVP and finally silenced his critics.

Super Bowl XL Ford Field, Detroit, Michigan

Pittsburgh Steelers-21 Seattle Seahawks-10

In just his second NFL season, Ben Roethlisberger led the Pittsburgh Steelers to Detroit where they would face the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL. Going into the game, the Steelers made it their number one priority to stop Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander who had scored 28 touchdowns that season (an NFL record at the time, but one which is now held by LaDanian Tomlinson). They held the all-pro running back to 95 yards on the ground and essentially shut down the Seattle offense, yielding only 10 points to the veteran unit. The Steelers depended on their defence and managed to put up 21 points behind a tremendous effort from their best receiver Hines Ward. Ward, who was named the MVP of the game, caught five passes for 123 yards - including a 46 yard touchdown that iced the game for Pittsburgh.

Super Bowl XXXIX, Alltel Stadium, Jacksonville, Florida

New England Patriots-24 Philadelphia Eagles-21

Looking for their third Super Bowl in four seasons, the Patriots were able to edge the Philadelphia Eagles, who were still seeking their first Super Bowl championship. With the score deadlocked at 14-14 heading into the fourth quarter, the Patriots were able to score 10 unanswered before the Eagles added a touchdown late in the game. In his first Super Bowl appearance, Donovan McNabb threw for 357 yards and three touchdowns but was also picked off three times. After fracturing his fibula just seven weeks earlier, Terrell Owens caught nine balls for 122 yards in a gutsy performance. In the end, it was the other quarterback-wide receiver combination that prevailed as Deion Branch and Tom Brady connected 11 times for 133 yards, which was enough to earn Branch the MVP award for the game.

Super Bowl XXXVIII Reliant Stadium, Houston, Texas

New England Patriots-32 Carolina Panthers-29

Two years on from their last Super Bowl win, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots found themselves locked in a tight game with the Carolina Panthers, one that would end with a last-minute kick. Brady threw for 354 yards and three touchdowns but was matched by his counterpart Jake Delhomme, who compiled 323 yard and three scores himself. The great quarterback play from both sides led to a game that was tied 29-29 late in the fourth quarter. After the Patriots drove into field goal range, Adam Vinatieri knocked in a last gasp 41 yard field goal to clinch the Super Bowl title for the Patriots. In a game where he completed two-thirds of his pass attempts, Brady was named the Super Bowl MVP - his second in three years.

Super Bowl XXXVII Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, California

Tampa Bay Buccaneers-48 Oakland Raiders-21

In a classic battle of a high-powered offense  against a shutdown defence, the Tampa Bay Bucs proved why there is much legitimacy to the idea that defence wins championships. Even with the reigning NFL MVP Rich Gannon on their side, the Raiders could not solve the Tampa Bay "cover 2" defensive scheme. The Buccaneers' secondary feasted on Gannon's mistakes all night en route to five interceptions - three of which that were taken back for touchdowns. The game got ugly early in the second half and the Buccaneers were able to coast to victory for their first Super Bowl championship. Tampa Bay safety Dexter Jackson was named the game's MVP for leading the secondary along with collecting two interceptions himself.

Super Bowl XXXVI Louisiana Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana

New England Patriots-20 St. Louis Rams-17

The 2002 Super Bowl featured two teams with completely different reputations. The St. Louis Rams, winners of the Super Bowl two seasons earlier were large favorites to the New England Patriots, who had made a magical run to just reach the Super Bowl. The Rams were known as "The Greatest Show on Turf" for their tremendous offensive ability that was highlighted by three players who were arguably the best at their position at the time: Kurt Warner who was the MVP of the regular season, Marshall Faulk and Torry Holt. On the flip side, the Patriots featured a quarterback who began the regular season as a little-known backup by the name of Tom Brady. The Patriot defense held the Rams to 17 points and even scored a touchdown themselves when Ty Law returned a Kurt Warner interception for 47 yards. With the game tied, Adam Vinatieri hit a 48 yard field goal as time expired to win the game. Brady was named Super Bowl MVP for his performance - one that is still looked back upon as a defining moment of his decorated career.

Super Bowl XXXV Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Florida

Baltimore Ravens-34 New York Giants-7

All season and through the playoffs the Baltimore Ravens were defined by their shutdown defense, so it was not surprising that their win in Super Bowl XXXV was much due to their work on the defensive side of the ball. In a dominant performance, the Ravens forced five turnovers and only surrendered one special teams touchdown. After the lone Giants touchdown made it 17-7 the Ravens assured that the New York momentum would stop immediately after Jermaine Lewis took the subsequent kickoff to the end zone. The leader of the Ravens' defense, Ray Lewis, earned the MVP award for the game for both a magnificent display of leadership along with an impressive individual performance.

Super Bowl XXXIV Georgia Dome, Atlanta, Georgia

St. Louis Rams-23 Tennessee Titans-16

In a battle between two of the best quarterbacks at the time, Kurt Warner and Steve McNair, it was Warner and his Rams that nicked the Titans. St. Louis scored the first 16 points followed by a Titan's 16-0 run of their own to level the game. In the fourth quarter, Warner found Isaac Bruce on a 73 yard touchdown pass to hand the Rams a seven point lead. The Titans were not done, as Steve McNair put them in a position to tie the game with the ball at the Rams' 10 yard line and enough time left to run one play. McNair completed a pass to Kevin Dyson who stretched for the goal line only to come up about a yard short after a game-saving tackle from St. Louis linebacker Mike Jones. The photo of Dyson's desperation reach for the end zone is still one of the most famous shots in Super Bowl history - a great look at how close Tennessee was to forcing overtime at the Georgia Dome. Even with the biggest play being made by a defensive player, Kurt Warner and his 414 passing yards were enough to be named the MVP of the game.
