Gambhir: I don’t enjoy batting
Gautam Gambhir told SportsCenter’s Dinesh Chopra in an exclusive chat that he doesn’t enjoy batting. Shocked? Read on.
Even after becoming the ICC Test player of the year and ranking number one in ICC Test batsman rating Gambhir said he doesn't enjoy batting.
Gautam Gambhir: It is pretty personal but I want to share this with you - I still remember that getting into the Test match against South Africa in Kolkata recently, I spoke to Gary and he told me that just go and enjoy yourself. And I told him that one thing that I don't enjoy is bat.
He said, ‘You are similar to me because we guys will never enjoy our batting.'
Dinesh Chopra: But there is everything going for you - you have records, the team is winning. As a cricketer you are in the lime light but you are still not enjoying! It is a littler bizarre!
Gautam Gambhir: As I said, I always keep analysing what mistakes I did and what else I can do to improve, what shots I can develop more. So I think that is the reason why I do not enjoy it. To enjoy it, you got to be relaxed but most of the times I have played cricket and since of the time I have started, I have never been relaxed. I always felt that I have to improve more, I have to keep on working on my game more and more. That is what makes me never enjoy my game because I am always hard on myself.
Dinesh Chopra: We at ESPN Star Sports have a message for you and that is - Please don't sulk!
Gautam Gambhir: On a serious note it might sound a little weird to everyone. But I have always felt and still feel that when I started playing for the country, i.e, in initial years whatever targets I used to set for myself, I still haven't achieved those. So I still keep telling myself that there have been years I have lost out on, so I want to make the most of the lost time and I want to keep scoring more and more runs. So that whatever targets I had set in the past, which I haven't achieved, I want to achieve it now.
So if I don't score runs, I sulk. I would be very honest to everyone that I do sulk when I don't score runs. In fact, I sulk big time!
Dinesh Chopra: Have you spoken to Paddy Upton about it?
Gautam Gambhir: Yes. And he has said that I have never seen someone like you. You are too weird and too different even after scoring a hundred. And there have been times when I told him that just after scoring a century, I start thinking how will I score a hundred in the next game.
As soon as I get out after scoring a century I think 'I have hit a ton and now the opposition would have seen what mistakes I am making so how should I score a hundred in the next match'.
There has never been a time when I have relaxed or relaxed my mind. I know don't whether it has to do with my past experiences or it is because I want to prove everyone wrong, who had tried to stop me once. There could be every possibility. It could be deep inside my heart that I want to prove those people wrong, who had tried stopping me. There could be times when my insecurities were far more that my securities even at this point in time.
